Terms and conditions

Welcome to Strays (“Strays”, “we”, “us”, or “our”). These Terms and Conditions (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of our website, including our articles, features, interviews, photography, guest submissions, contributor accounts, comments, and any related community features.

By accessing or using this website, submitting work to us, creating a contributor account, or posting a comment, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree with these Terms, please do not use the website.

1. About Strays
Strays is an online photography magazine and community focused on contemporary, independent, experimental, personal, and esoteric photographic work. The website publishes editorial features, contributor-led posts, interviews, projects, essays, commentary, and related materials.

2. Intellectual Property

2.1 Our content.
Unless otherwise stated, all editorial content, written materials, graphics, logos, layouts, design elements, website copy, and other materials created by or for Strays are owned by Strays or licensed to us.

You may not copy, reproduce, republish, upload, distribute, modify, sell, or commercially exploit our content without our prior written permission, except where permitted by law.

You may share links to our published pages, and you may quote short extracts for commentary, criticism, review, or non-commercial discussion, provided that Strays is clearly credited and linked.

2.2 Contributor and guest submissions.
Contributors retain ownership of the articles, essays, photography, images, captions, project texts, interviews, reviews, or other materials they submit to Strays (“Submissions”).

By submitting work to Strays, you grant us a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to publish, edit, format, reproduce, display, archive, promote, excerpt, translate, and distribute your Submission in connection with Strays, including on our website, social media channels, newsletters, promotional materials, and future Strays-related editorial platforms.

This licence allows us to operate, promote, archive, and maintain the publication. It does not transfer ownership of your work to us.

Where reasonably possible, we will credit contributors by name, handle, website, or another agreed form of attribution. Contributors are responsible for providing accurate credit information.

2.3 Photography and image rights.
If you submit photography, images, artwork, screenshots, scans, archival materials, or any other visual content, you confirm that:

  • you own the relevant rights, or have permission from the rights holder to submit and publish the material;
  • publication by Strays will not infringe any copyright, privacy, publicity, moral, contractual, or other third-party rights;
  • any required permissions, releases, or consents have been obtained where necessary;
  • captions, credits, and image details supplied by you are accurate to the best of your knowledge.

Strays is not responsible for verifying ownership of every submitted image. If we receive a credible rights complaint, we may remove, edit, restrict, or investigate the relevant material at our discretion.

2.4 Editing and formatting.
By submitting work to Strays, you understand that we may edit, proofread, crop, resize, format, headline, excerpt, or otherwise prepare your Submission for publication.

For substantial editorial changes, we will aim to consult you where practical. However, final editorial control rests with Strays. We will not materially alter the meaning, intent, or integrity of your work without your consent. Routine editorial preparation — such as proofreading, formatting, cropping for layout, or minor trims for length — does not require separate consent.

We are not required to publish any Submission, and we may decline, postpone, remove, or unpublish any Submission at our discretion.

3. Contributor Accounts
We may invite selected contributors to access the website backend to draft, format, upload images, or prepare posts for review.

If you are given contributor access, you agree to:

  • keep your login details secure;
  • use the account only for authorised Strays-related work;
  • upload only material that you have the right to use;
  • not publish, delete, edit, or interfere with other users’ work unless authorised;
  • not install plugins, alter site settings, change themes, or access restricted areas unless permitted;
  • not use the website backend for spam, commercial promotion, or unrelated activity.

We may suspend or remove contributor access at any time, with or without notice, especially if we believe the account has been misused, compromised, or used in a way that could harm Strays, contributors, readers, or the website.

4. Comments and Community Participation
Comments are an important part of Strays, but participation must remain respectful, relevant, and lawful.

By posting a comment, you grant Strays a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to display, reproduce, moderate, edit (for example, to redact private information or correct formatting), remove, archive, and otherwise use that comment in connection with the website and related Strays channels.

You are responsible for the comments you post.

We reserve the right to moderate, edit, delete, hide, restrict, or block comments or users at our discretion. We are not obliged to publish any comment or explain moderation decisions.

You must not post content that is:

  • defamatory, abusive, threatening, harassing, hateful, or discriminatory;
  • invasive of another person’s privacy;
  • sexually explicit, violent, or otherwise inappropriate;
  • spam, repetitive promotion, or unsolicited advertising;
  • misleading, impersonating another person, or posted under false pretences;
  • infringing copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, or other rights;
  • illegal or encouraging illegal activity;
  • harmful to the security, operation, or integrity of the website.

5. Copyright Complaints and Takedown Requests
If you believe that material on Strays infringes your copyright or other rights, please contact us here with:

  • your name and contact details;
  • identification of the material in question;
  • the page URL where the material appears;
  • a brief explanation of your rights and the issue;
  • any supporting evidence, where available.

We may remove, restrict, credit, amend, or investigate the material at our discretion.

Submitting a complaint does not guarantee removal, but we will consider good-faith complaints seriously.

6. Third-Party Links and Embedded Content
Strays may include links to third-party websites, social media profiles, portfolios, videos, embeds, publications, shops, or other external services.

We are not responsible for the content, accuracy, privacy practices, availability, or policies of third-party websites or services. Accessing third-party links is at your own risk.

7. Privacy and Cookies
Use of Strays may involve the collection or processing of personal data, including information submitted through comments, contact forms, contributor emails, account logins, analytics tools, cookies, or newsletter sign-ups.

Our handling of personal data should be read together with our separate Privacy Policy and, where applicable, our Cookie Policy. The Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy form part of, and should be read together with, these Terms.

If Strays uses third-party services, such as WordPress.com, analytics providers, email platforms, spam filters, social embeds, or newsletter tools, those services may also process data according to their own terms and privacy policies.

8. Monetisation
Strays is currently operated as an editorial photography platform and does not generate money. We may in future introduce monetisation, including advertising, sponsorship, paid features, affiliate links, subscriptions, merchandise, events, grants, partnerships, or other commercial activity.

Unless separately agreed in writing, contributors are not entitled to payment, royalties, advertising revenue, sponsorship income, or other compensation arising from publication on Strays.

9. Disclaimers
The content on Strays is provided for general editorial, cultural, artistic, informational, and community purposes.

Articles, interviews, reviews, comments, and guest posts may express personal opinions. Views expressed by contributors, interviewees, commenters, or third parties are their own and do not necessarily reflect the views of Strays.

We do not guarantee that the website will always be available, uninterrupted, secure, accurate, complete, or free from errors.

We may update, remove, alter, suspend, or discontinue any part of the website at any time.

10. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Strays shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive loss or damage arising from:

  • your use of, or inability to use, the website;
  • reliance on any content published on the website;
  • contributor submissions or user comments;
  • third-party links, services, or embedded content;
  • website errors, interruptions, security issues, or data loss.

Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under applicable law.

11. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Strays from any claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs, or expenses arising from:

  • your breach of these Terms;
  • your Submission, comment, or uploaded material;
  • your infringement of another person’s rights;
  • your misuse of the website or contributor account.

12. Termination or Restriction of Access
We may restrict, suspend, or terminate your access to the website, comments, contributor tools, or user account at any time if we believe you have breached these Terms, misused the website, or acted in a way that may harm Strays, other users, contributors, or third parties.

13. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. The updated version will be posted on this page with a revised “Last updated” date.

Your continued use of the website after changes are posted means you accept the updated Terms.

14. Governing Law
These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy, are governed by the laws of Singapore.

Any disputes relating to these Terms, our Privacy Policy, our Cookie Policy, the website, Submissions, comments, or use of Strays shall be subject to the courts of Singapore, unless otherwise required by applicable law.
